Mark Latham, before his elevation to Leader of the Opposition, spoke some words of hope to the 2003 PIA Conference in Adelaide. But, in 2004, does he remember those words, and will he do anything to make them happen? Who knows? The current Federal Government has been missing in action. It has largely disengaged from the planning and design of cities – either ignorant of, or disinterested in the fact that the cities are the powerhouse of our economy into the 21st Century.
This does not augur well, but there is a sense of change in the air. Whether this comes from a change of government or a ‘me too’ change from the current government remains to be seen. But change it must. Urban Design Forum has made preliminary enquiries to the major parties about their intent. But that is just the beginning. What questions about urban design and planning matters would you like them to publicly answer – before you cast your vote?
Send the questions to the UDF Editor by email [email protected] as soon as possible, and they will be submitted to the political parties, as they are pondering their future. The questions, and any answers, will be published in the next edition of UDF.
